(Blessed Virgin Mary)

TOPIC: PREPARED FOR THE MASTER’S USE

READ: LUKE 1:26-38 (NKJV)

1:26. Now in the sixth month the angel Gabriel was sent by God to a city of Galilee named Nazareth,

1:27. to a virgin betrothed to a man whose name was Joseph, of the house of David. The virgin’s name [was] Mary.

1:28. And having come in, the angel said to her, “Rejoice, highly favored [one,] the Lord [is] with you; blessed [are] you among women!”

1:29. But when she saw [him,] she was troubled at his saying, and considered what manner of igreeting this was.

1:30. Then the angel said to her, “Do not be afraid, Mary, for you have found favor with God.

1:31. “And behold, you will conceive in your womb and bring forth a Son, and shall call His name JESUS.

1:32. “He will be great, and will be called the Son of the Highest; and the Lord God will give Him the throne of His father David.

1:33. “And He will reign over the house of Jacob forever, and of His kingdom there will be no end.”

1:34. Then Mary said to the angel, “How can this be, since I do not know a man?”

1:35. And the angel answered and said to her, “[The] Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Highest will overshadow you; therefore, also, that Holy One who is to be born will be called the Son of God.

1:36. “Now indeed, Elizabeth your relative has also conceived a son in her old age; and this is now the sixth month for her who was called barren.

1:37. “For with God nothing will be impossible.”

1:38. Then Mary said, “Behold the maidservant of the Lord! Let it be to me according to your word.” And the angel departed from her.

THE MESSAGE:

Angel Gabriel visited Mary to announce the good news about her selection as the Mother of the Saviour, Jesus Christ. He called her highly favoured or endued with grace (verse 28). Grace is unmerited favour, but the environment for it can be created. The life of Mary was full of godly virtues which heaven needed for the Master’s use. An analysis of this text shows the following:

1. Mary saw the angel (verse 29). Unfortunately some of us today miss their day of visitation because they fail to see God through a Bible study, Talk, divine counsel, etc.

2. Mary responded positively by believing the word in verse 38, in spite of the fact that there was no previous evidence of a virgin birth to stir her faith.

3. She also inquired honestly about what she did not understand (verse 34). This quality is lacking in many persons today who keep silent in their ignorance about many biblical doctrines.

4. She was a woman who confessed with her mouth the words she heard from God (verse 37).

5. Though she was engaged, she was a virgin-a quality being seriously eroded in our generation today.

The key thing was that she manifested these qualities naturally and not because she was expecting a special favour from heaven. Are you challenged by the godly life of Mary? Learn from her today and imbibe the qualities that made her life an example. If you do this, God will certainly select you to fulfil His purpose in your time.

PRAYER: Dear Lord, help me to live a godly life in my generation, Amen
