(St John The Apostle)
TOPIC: ALIVE IN CHRIST
READ: JOHN 21: 19-24 (NKJV)
21:19. This He spoke, signifying by what death he would glorify God. And when He had spoken this, He said to him, “Follow Me.”
21:20. Then Peter, turning around, saw the disciple whom Jesus loved following, who also had leaned on His breast at the supper, and said, “Lord, who is the one who betrays You?”
21:21. Peter, seeing him, said to Jesus, “But Lord, what [about] this man?”
21:22. Jesus said to him, “If I will that he remain till I come, what [is that] to you? You follow Me.”
21:23. Then this saying went out among the brethren that this disciple would not die. Yet Jesus did not say to him that he would not die, but, “If I will that he remain till I come, what [is that] to you?”
21:24. This is the disciple who testifies of these things, and wrote these things; and we know that his testimony is true.
THE MESSAGE:
Today is the feast of St John, the Apostle. He was the son of Zebedee, the “Beloved disciple” (verse 20). He was the only disciple among the twelve present at the feet of the Cross, to whom Jesus handed over His mother, Mary. He was the author of St John’s Gospel, the 3 Epistles of John and the book of Revelation. John was banished to the Island of Patmos in about AD 95, and was the only one of the twelve to die a natural death. Evidence suggests that he died peacefully in the Asia Minor city of Ephesus in about AD100.
In verse 22 of our text, Jesus said in regards to John: “If I want him to remain alive until I return, what is that to you?… ” This did not mean that John would not die, but reveals the Master’s desire for us to remain alive in Him. On account of the sufferings and challenges of the perilous times we live in, the love of many is waxing cold; some are shrinking back and others are wrecking their faith. These threats not minding, Jesus wants us to remain alive in Him and in the profession of our faith in our fast decaying world. He promises that “He who believes in me will live, even though he dies; and whoever lives and believes in me will never die…” (John 11:25-26). Your faith is like a seed, preserve it and keep it alive and growing.
PRAYER: Lord, give me the grace to keep my faith in You alive in these challenging times
