The Daily Fountain Devotional of the Church Of Nigeria (Anglican Communion) 29 December 2024 — Christ The King Over All

TOPIC: Christ The King Over All

READ: Psalm 2:1-12 (NKJV)

  1. Why do the nations rage, And the people plot a vain thing?
  2. The kings of the earth set themselves, And the rulers take counsel together, Against the LORD and against His Anointed, [saying,]
  3. “Let us break Their bonds in pieces And cast away Their cords from us.”
  4. He who sits in the heavens shall laugh; The LORD shall hold them in derision.
  5. Then He shall speak to them in His wrath, And distress them in His deep displeasure:
  6. “Yet I have set My King On My holy hill of Zion.”
  7. “I will declare the decree: The LORD has said to Me, ‘You [are] My Son, Today I have begotten You.
  8. Ask of Me, and I will give [You] The nations [for] Your inheritance, And the ends of the earth [for] Your possession.
  9. You shall break them with a rod of iron; You shall dash them to pieces like a potter’s vessel.’ “
  10. Now therefore, be wise, O kings; Be instructed, you judges of the earth.
  11. Serve the LORD with fear, And rejoice with trembling.
  12. Kiss the Son, lest He be angry, And you perish [in] the way, When His wrath is kindled but a little. Blessed [are] all those who put their trust in Him.

THE MESSAGE

Psalm 2 is a royal psalm composed originally for the coronation of Davidic kings and also has Messiahnic role fulfilled in Jesus. Christ’s reign as king is marked by rebellion, conspiracies and plots (vv.1-3). But that notwithstanding, Christ’s reign in all generations is sure. This psalm also proclaims God’s judgment, future redemption of his people and the blessedness of all who acknowledge the lordship of God and His anointed and “take refuge in Him” (v.12). Note that it is God Himself that proclaimed the “Father-Son” relationship between Him and His Anointed. This statement appears elsewhere in the Scriptures to prove the superiority of the Ministry of Christ as Son, over all others, including angels, see Hebrews 1:5. When threatened by the Sanhedrin, Peter and John quoted this Psalm in Acts 4:25-26 to express their resolve to continue to preach the gospel despite the warning of the Sanhedrin.

It is good that we worship God and serve Him and His Anointed in all sincerity, with awe and joyful praise. We must not be involved in any act of rebellion or disobedience to God, for He is a consuming fire. Faith is a potent spiritual currency through which we receive from God.

Can you believe God enough today to ask and He will give you the nations for an inheritance and the ends of the earth for your possession? Have you acknowledged the Lordship of God and Christ in your life? Have you taken refuge in Him?

PRAYER: O Lord, come and take your place in my life and reign over this generation. Amen
