“So then, let us not sleep as others do, but let us be alert and sober.” – 1 Thessalonians 5:6

I once heard a story about a boy named Billy. He had a habit of falling asleep in class. One day the teacher wrote the word “apathy” on the board, then she called on Billy to explain the meaning of the word. Billy’s buddy punched him and said, “The teacher is calling on you. Wake up!” Billy looked around, glanced at the board, and said, “Who cares?”

If we aren’t careful, we can begin to lose our distinctiveness, until we realize that apathy has set in. In effect we get “gobbled up” by the culture.

If you sense that your passion for the things of God has diminished, our verse today is a warning to “Wake up!”
