5 famous people now supporting, endorsing Trump after assassination attempt

The attempt on former President Donald Trump’s life Saturday in Butler, Pennsylvania, prompted formal endorsements and other forms of support from prominent figures, some of whom had previously remained on the fence.

The shooting — which grazed Trump’s right ear, killed 50-year-old rallygoer Corey Comperatore, and severely wounded two others — led to a flood of condemnation from top corporate leaders and executives such as Apple CEO Tim Cook, Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg, Amazon founder Jeff Bezos and others, according to Fortune.

Here is a list of some notable figures who formally endorsed Trump or otherwise came out in support of him in the wake of the assassination attempt.

Elon Musk

Tesla founder and X CEO Elon Musk, though he previously expressed reluctance to endorse a 2024 presidential candidate, came out in full-throated support of Trump shortly after he was shot Saturday.

“I fully endorse President Trump and hope for his rapid recovery,” Musk tweeted less than an hour after the shooting.

“Last time America had a candidate this tough was Theodore Roosevelt,” he later added in an apparent reference to when Roosevelt was shot in the chest but survived and finished a speech in 1912.

Musk also called on the top brass of the U.S. Secret Service to resign, writing: “Extreme incompetence or it was deliberate. Either way, the SS leadership must resign.”

Despite an increasing rapport with Trump in recent months, Musk had held off on throwing his support behind any particular candidate until Saturday’s shooting, though he had previously expressed frustration with President Joe Biden.

“I may, in the final stretch, endorse a candidate,” Musk told journalist Don Lemon during an interview in March. “But I don’t know yet … I’m leaning away from Biden. I’ve made no secret of that.”

A day before the assassination attempt, Bloomberg reported that Musk had donated to America PAC, a political action committee committed to re-electing Trump.

In response to an X user who said Trump should choose Sen. JD Vance, R-Ohio, as his running mate, Musk also tweeted: “You’re right.”

Trump announced Vance as his vice presidential candidate on Monday. “TRUMP VANCE,” Musk tweeted following the announcement. “Resounds with victory.”

Bill Ackman

Billionaire Bill Ackman, who serves as CEO of the hedge fund company Pershing Square, issued “a long-form post” on X following the shooting that explained why he was formally endorsing Trump.

“I am going to formally endorse [Trump],” Ackman wrote. “I came to this decision some time ago as many X followers have already understood from my supportive posts of Trump and my criticisms of… Biden.”

“The reason why I have not yet formally done so is that I want to explain my thinking in detail and address the arguments put forth by others against Trump. I want to make the case thoughtfully and convincingly,” Ackman added.

Republican billionaires Ken Griffin and Paul Singer, despite having been critical of Trump in the past, have met with him to talk about potentially contributing financially to his campaign, Fortune reported on Saturday.

Dave Portnoy

Barstool Sports CEO Dave Portnoy, who interviewed Trump at the White House in 2020, released a video expressing his belief that the assassination attempt has secured the election for Trump, and questioned why Biden took so long to respond.

“I was on a plane when this assassination attempt happened,” Portnoy said in a video posted to X. “Absolutely insane. One of the craziest things in our lifetime. It will live on forever. I think the election is over: Trump’s going to win. More importantly — not more importantly — but in this country, the hate, the division, all of it; this is how you get to this point. It’s insane.”

Portnoy went on to blast Biden for taking so long to issue a statement in response to the potential murder of a former president.

“He’s the president of the United States,” Portnoy said. “A former president … just got his ear shot off in an assassination attempt. … It’s been an hour and a half. Crickets from the White House! You’re the president of the United States. What are you doing? You have to react, whether it’s an assassination attempt, a terrorist attack, whatever it may be. An hour and a half? Crickets? Nothing? What is Joe Biden doing?”

Biden released a statement nearly two hours after the attempt on Trump’s life, and delivered a speech from the Oval Office the next day calling for national unity.

  • Jim Caviezel
Actor Jim Caviezel, who famously portrayed Jesus in the 2004 film “The Passion of the Christ,” also formally endorsed Trump after the assassination attempt.
“I fully endorse Trump for President of the United States 2024,” Caviezel wrote Monday in a Facebook post that showed the actor standing behind Trump.

While his formal endorsement took place after Trump’s assassination attempt, Caviezel has spoken highly of the former president in the past, especially regarding his work to fight against child sex trafficking.
During a 2023 interview with Fox & Friends, Caviezel described Trump as “the new Moses” when it comes to such an endeavor.

“We have to do a lot more. And we got to start with Donald Trump,” Caviezel said at the time. He went on to explain that Trump has “got to be in there because he’s going to go after the traffickers.”

“This is the new Moses,” Caviezel added. “I mean, I’m still Jesus, but he’s the new Moses. Pharaoh, let my children go free.”
Caviezel recently depicted Tim Ballard in the 2023 film “Sound of Freedom,” which tells the story of a former U.S. government agent who went to Colombia to rescue children from sex traffickers. The movie made approximately $250 million at the box office despite its meager $14.5 million budget.

  • 50 Cent, Kid Rock
Though he stopped short of endorsing him, rapper 50 Cent made headlines when he posted a tribute following the attack against Trump.
“Trump gets shot and now I’m trending,” the rapper wrote on X above a photo of Trump’s head superimposed over his on one of his albums.

In “Many Men,” a vulgar single that was popular in 2003, 50 Cent rapped that “many men wish death upon me.”
The rapper attached the song to a since-deleted post of the photo of a bloodied Trump raising his fist.
“I know the vibes…we are all in trouble now!” he also wrote.
Other prominent rappers and music artists denounced the attack against Trump, including Kid Rock, who released a video in which he said, “You [expletive] with Trump, you [expletive] with me.”

Kid Rock reportedly contributed $50,000 to a Trump-endorsed GoFundMe to provide financial support for the families of the victims of the Saturday rally in Butler.
