Text: Jeremiah 32:36-44 (KJV)

36 And now therefore thus saith the LORD, the God of Israel, concerning this city, whereof ye say, It shall be delivered into the hand of the king of Babylon by the sword, and by the famine, and by the pestilence;

37 Behold, I will gather them out of all countries, whither I have driven them in mine anger, and in my fury, and in great wrath; and I will bring them again unto this place, and I will cause them to dwell safely:

38 And they shall be my people, and I will be their God:

39 And I will give them one heart, and one way, that they may fear me for ever, for the good of them, and of their children after them:

40 And I will make an everlasting covenant with them, that I will not turn away from them, to do them good; but I will put my fear in their hearts, that they shall not depart from me.

41 Yea, I will rejoice over them to do them good, and I will plant them in this land assuredly with my whole heart and with my whole soul.

42 For thus saith the LORD; Like as I have brought all this great evil upon this people, so will I bring upon them all the good that I have promised them.

43 And fields shall be bought in this land, whereof ye say, It is desolate without man or beast; it is given into the hand of the Chaldeans.

44 Men shall buy fields for money, and subscribe evidences, and seal them, and take witnesses in the land of Benjamin, and in the places about Jerusalem, and in the cities of Judah, and in the cities of the mountains, and in the cities of the valley, and in the cities of the south: for I will cause their captivity to return, saith the LORD.

Key Verse: “Behold, I will gather them out of all countries, whither I have driven them in mine anger, and in my fury, and in great wrath; and I will bring them again unto this place, and I will cause them to dwell safely.” – (Jeremiah 32:37)

MESSAGE:

A report was published in a local newspaper recently about a man whose only car was set ablaze by his notorious son. In an attempt to teach the stubborn boy a lesson, the man got the boy arrested and hired a lawyer to get the child tried in a law court. The case was accelerated and the boy was found guilty of a misdemeanour and was sentenced to three months in jail with hard labour or a fine of N50,000. This was an amount the court knew the boy would not be able to pay. However, to the surprise and chagrin of all and sundry, the father, who was the complainant in the case, out of filial love and compassion, dramatically and tearfully dipped his hand in his pocket and paid the fine in order to get the boy released.

Our passage x-rays how the people of Israel had sinned against God. They had gone into apostasy, disobedience and unfaithfulness to God. They were no more loyal to Him; neither did they take Him as the Lord, who delivered them from the bondage of Egypt, anymore. Therefore, God had to discipline them by allowing the enemy nations to carry them into captivity.

However, after God had disciplined them in foreign lands for some years, He decided out of His loving and compassionate heart to bring them back from captivity and re-settle them back in their land of heritage, where they would serve Him acceptably.

Are you being chastened on account of your disobedience to God? Are you now in “the land of captivity” for being unfaithful to God? Are you passing through a fierce furnace of affliction because of your sinful life? God, the compassionate Father, will lovingly draw you back to Himself and re-settle you in the place of your dream and desire if only you are ready to repent and put your faith in Christ today.

Thought For The Day: Christ loves you still; will you love and obey Him in return?
