Avoid Strife

From the book My Time with God – by Joyce Mey

Throughout Proverbs, there are frequent references to avoiding strife by being careful about what we say. We are encouraged to use excellent speech, to think before we speak, and not to talk too much.

Strife is said to be bickering, arguing, heated disagreement, and an angry undercurrent. God’s Word teaches us that it is very dangerous and displeasing to God. Wrong words spoken in haste are very often the beginning of strife.

God’s presence and blessing abide where there is unity, not strife and turmoil, so we should do all we can to remain peaceful at all times. God has changed me over the years, and I now prefer to be peaceful rather than right in situations that don’t really matter anyway. Being right is highly overrated! We often get into arguments with people in an effort to prove them wrong and ourselves right, but it doesn’t do any good except to perhaps feed our ego.

Peace is one of the most valuable things we can have, so let’s do all we can to protect ours!

Prayer of the Day: Father, forgive me for the unwise words I have spoken that ended up causing strife. Help me do what I need to do to live in peace at all times, amen.
