TOPIC BE NOT AFRAID, ONLY BELIEVE

TEXT Mat 9:18-26, Mark 5: 21-43

HYMN S, S & S 687, “Nearer, my God, to thee”

CENTRAL THOUGHT Faith in God cast out/defiles fear.

INTRODUCTION:
There are many situations that we encounter in our lives that may seem overwhelming and tend to stretch our belief to a point of
losing faith in God’s omnipotence. We must realise that the eternal God is always there to calm our fears and come to our rescue as long as We put our trust in Him. The Bible is replete with the phrases fear not” and “be not afraid”. It is very important to
note that whatever God says He will do, He can do. He watches over His Word to perform it” Jer. 1:12.
In this study, we shall be looking at two events in the Scriptures; that of raising of
Jairus daughter to life and the healing of the woman with the issue of blood. Both expressed faith in Christ Jesus and were rewarded for doing so. We shall further be examining the fruits of their faith with the
hope of deriving some lessons therefrom.

LESSON OBJECTIVES:
The objectives of the study are to:

  1. know who Jairus was, and his circumstances;
  2. learn from Jairus humility and faith as stated in the
    ScriptureS
  3. Examine the outcome of his faith, explain any lesson we can learn from that:
  4. identify the woman with the issue of blood and her Circumstances: and

5.appreciate what the Lord did for them.

  • BIBLE TRUTH:*

A. JAIRUS DAUGHTER
RAISED TO LIFE

Q1.WHO WAS JAIRUS AND WHAT WAS HIS PROBLEM? (Matt. 9:18a; Mark 5:22, 23, 35, 36)
Jairus was one of the rulers in the synagogue. His problem was that his only daughter was
very sick, nigh unto death. He came to Jesus and besought him to come and lay hands on
his daughter that she might be healed and that she might live.
Another message came not long after, informing Jairus that his daughter had died and there was no need troubling
the Master any longer. Jairus must have been
troubled at the report and possibly become afraid, giving up hope that his
daughter would live again. However, Scripture says As soon as Jesus heard the word
that was spoken, He said unto the ruler of the synagogue Be not afraid, only believe”

Q2. READ Matt. 9:18: Mark 5:22-23 AND COMMENT ON THE FOLOWING:

I. His humility: Jairus
showed great humility as he came to Jesus. He fell at His feet and worshipped Him not
minding the crowd. He did not mind his position as a ruler of the synagogue.

ii His faith: Jairus had faith that his sick daughter would be healed if the Lord Jesus
would come and lay hands on her. So, he actually came to meet Jesus and besought Him to come to his house.

Q3a. WHAT WAS THE RESULT OF HIS FAITH?
His dead daughter was brought back to life after Jesus Christ followed Jairus to his
house. Christ took the damsel by the hand and commanded her to rise and immediately
she arose and walked.

Q3b. EXPLAIN THE SIGNIFICANCE OF JESUS STATEMENT IN Mark 5:36, 39; Matt. 9:24

The significance of Jesus statement in Mark 5:36 which says..Be not afraid, only
believe is an assurance that there is nothing impossible with God. We only need to
trust in God for the accomplishment. For with
God all things are possible if only we believe.
When Jesus came to the house
of Jairus, He said to the people there “Why make ye ado, and weep? The damsel is not dead but sleepeth” (Mark 5:39).
Jesus made this statement to them in order to remind the people that He (Jesus) is the
resurrection and the life and anyone that believes in Him, even if he is dead shall live.
There is no situation that Jesus cannot speak life into, no matter how hopeless it may
Seem.

Q3c. COMMENT ON/THE CROWD’S REACTION TO JESUS’ CLAIM (Mark 5:39-40; Matt. 9:24) ANY LESSON?

When Jesus got to Jairus house, He told the people there that the damsel was not
dead but was sleeping and. straightway He sent the crowd away. The crowd laughed
Him to scorn. But after Jesus raised the girl back to life. they were astonished with
great astonishment.
The lesson we need to learn
from this is that there is nothing that we bring before God that we cannot get
solution for no matter the discouragement from men.
No situation can be adjudged too late for God to remedy as long we have faith and trust in
Him.

B. THE WOMAN WITH THE ISSUE OF BLOOD
CURED

Q4a. WHAT WAS THE WOMAN’S PROBLEM AND WHAT STEPS DID. SHE TAKE TO RECEIVE HER HEALING? (Mark
5:25-33; Matt. 9:20, 21)
The woman’s problem was that she was diseased with an issue of blood for twelve years. She had been to many Physicians and had spent all that she had, rather than
getting better it grew worse. When the woman heard about Jesus, she came in the crowd
behind not minding how she might appear to people who were in the place and how
embarrassing her condition may have seemed to them. The woman took a bold step
of faith. She thought within herself that if she could touch Jesus garment that she would
be made whole. As soon as she
touched the hem of the garment of Jesus, straightway the fountain of her blood dried
and she immediately felt in her body that she was healed of the plague. As soon as the
healing took place, Jesus knew within Himself that virtue had gone out of Him.
Despite the crowd following Him, Christ knew that Someone touched Him and so He asked who touched Him. His disciples were amazed at His question and told Him that because of the multitude thronging Him, it would be
difficult to know who touched Him. It was obvious that Jesus knew that it was the
woman with the issue blood that touched Him. On hearing this, the woman fell down before Christ with fear and trembling, having realised what had been done in her
body and told Him all the truth.
There are many lessons we
can learn from this. First of all we must learn that if we have faith in God, then there is no
limit to what we can receive from the Lord. Also, we should never be discouraged to think that our situation is so bad that it defies solution as long as we present it to God in
faith believing in His divine intervention. Jesus can never be so busy or so
overwhelmed by the crowd or whatever that He will not notice anyone that comes to
Him in faith. Despite the multitude that may be calling on Him, He sees and hears you as an individual as you put your faith to Him.

Q5. WHAT DID THE LORD DO IN EACH OF THESE OCCASIONS?
(Matt. 9:19, 22-25; Mark 5:30-34)

When Jairus came to Jesus to ask Him to come to his house to heal his daughter, Jesus and His disciples arose and
followed him. On their way to Jairus house, the woman with the issue of blood came
behind and touched the hem of the garment of Jesus. Jesus did not ignore her; He still
made time to talk to her and extended His healing virtue to her. Jesus turned round and
when He saw her, He said to her “Daughter, be of good comfort; thy faith hath made thee whole” (Matt. 9:22b).
The woman was immediately made whole.
Jesus arrived at Jairus house, He met
people making noise, by that time the damsel had already died. Jesus instructed that all
the people should be put out saying to them that the damsel was not dead but sleeping
They all laughed Him to scorn. After putting the people out, Jesus went in and took
Jairus daughter by the hand and she arose and came back to life.

There are lessons for us from these miracles that Jesus performed in the life of the woman with the issue of blood and that of Jairus daughter. It does not matter how bad our
circumstances or situations may seem it can never defy God’s ability. Also, it is never too late with God. Many of us find it difficult to stay put in God when we start feeling
despondent and thinking that nothing can be done anymore. Hold on and hold
forth, God will surely appear at His own due time and your expectation shall surely be met.

DAILY LIVING APPLICATION:
As we live our lives as believers, we encounter challenges and situations that
make us afraid. In some cases, we become so worried that we tend to give up. One
thing is clear and worthy of note. We serve the God who is able to do all things. He says
“Behold, I am the LORD, the God of all flesh: is there anything too hard for me?
(Jer. 32:27).
Our belief and trust in God should dispel fear from our lives knowing whom we have
believed; we should be persuaded that He is able to keep whatever We have Committed unto him. God honours every expression of
our faith in Him. He will never disappoint anyone who trusts in Him. For with God nothing shall be impossible.

MEMORY VERSE: Mark 5:34
“And he said unto her
daughter thy faith hath made
thee whole: go in peace and be
whole of thy plague”
