Can you really only preach with your actions?

How then will they call on him in whom they have not believed? And how are they to believe in him of whom they have never heard? And how are they to hear without someone preaching?
–Romans 10:14
There’s a quote that’s often attributed to St. Francis of Assisi that says, “Preach the gospel at all times—if necessary use words.” Now whether St. Francis really said that is a matter of debate. But what should really concern us is how many people abuse that quote to justify never using words to share the Gospel.
Some people think, “When I witness, I’ll just witness by my life. Then when someone sees me being good, they’ll ask me about what I believe.” This is a convenient way of them not having to be active in sharing their faith. They can just sit back with their bait in the boat and watch the fish jump in!
Now I want you to hear me clearly: Preach with your actions. Let there be congruency between what you proclaim in your life and how you live. But at the same time, don’t rely on your good works to inspire people to follow Christ because faith comes by hearing!
So if I may, let me amend that quote: “Preach the Gospel at all times—through your actions and your words.” When you allow the Holy Spirit to work in and through you and share the Word of God with others, people will both see and hear the Gospel of Jesus Christ!
YOUR GOOD WORKS ALONE WON’T BRING PEOPLE TO CHRIST. SO PREACH THE GOSPEL IN BOTH YOUR ACTIONS AND YOUR WORDS!
