But you, Bethlehem Ephrathah, though you are little among the thousands of Judah, yet out of you shall come forth to Me the One to be Ruler in Israel, whose goings forth are from of old, from everlasting.
Micah 5:2

 Recommended Reading: Luke 2:15

O little town of Bethlehem, how still we see thee lie! Above thy deep and dreamless sleep the silent stars go by. Yet in thy dark streets shineth, the everlasting Light.

Three years before penning these timeless words in 1868, Phillips Brooks had ridden on horseback through the fields outside of Bethlehem on Christmas Eve. No doubt he imagined what it was like for the darkness of the fields to be illuminated by the light of heaven as the angels announced the birth of Jesus in the village. But greater than that light in the fields was the Light of the world that shone in the “dark streets” of Bethlehem, a Light that “gives light to every man coming into the world” (John 1:9). And all who receive that Light become “children of God” (John 1:12).

If the streets of your life seem dark today, meditate on the One who is “the light of the world,” who gives to you “the light of life” (John 8:12).
