Now after Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea in the days of Herod the king, behold, wise men from the East came to Jerusalem, saying, “Where is He who has been born King of the Jews?”
Matthew 2:1-2
Recommended Reading: Matthew 2:1-12
And by the light of that same star, the wise men came from country far; to seek for a king was their intent, and to follow the star wherever it went.
The Magi of the first Christmas get only 12 verses in Scripture (Matthew 2:1-12), but there is much we can learn from them. They were most likely pagan (Gentile) astronomers from Mesopotamia or Arabia. In either case, following the star to Bethlehem was no easy task. Probably weeks of travel in a caravan of camels across deserts, mountains, and plains—a sign of their commitment. As the carol says, they were intent on following the star “wherever it went..” They overcame untold obstacles to display their recognition that something world-changing was happening in Bethlehem.
We know Who the star heralded. Are we as committed as the wise men were? They followed a star and worshiped the newborn King. Are we as committed to following Him today wherever He leads?
