TOPIC: CHRISTIAN COMMITMENT
TEXT 1 COR. 12:12-27
HYMN S. S. & S. 616 “Take my life and let it be”
CENTRAL THOUGHT: Our Commitment should seek to build the church through our words, action and participation.
INTRODUCTION:
Paul the apostle compared the Body of Christ to a human body. Each part has a specific function that is necessary to the
body as a whole. The parts are different for a purpose and in their differences, they must work together. We must avoid being too
proud of our abilities and also avoid
thinking we have nothing to give to the body of believers. In this lesson, we shall
identify areas we can serve God through our
commitment in our local assembly and the
rewards of doing so.
LESSON OBJECTIVES:
At the end of the lesson, we shall be able to:
- explain the phrase “Christian commitment”
- identify and discuss our individual place in the Body of Christ:
- explain some of the opportunities available to us to serve God and humanity in our local church;
- discuss the excuses some people give for not being committed:
- discuss the rewards of being committed in Christian services.
BIBLE TRUTH: Q1(a). WHAT DO YOU UNDERSTAND BY THE PHRASE “CHRISTIAN COMMITMENT”?
Commitment is a word that describe a process of pledging oneself passionately to a
course. It involves a passionate drive resulting in activities you derive pleasure
in doing. Christian Commitment therefore involves loyalty to God and hard work in God’s vineyard. Christian commitment is exhibited in whatever you do in and out of God’s house
wholeheartedly, whether being watched, observed or not.
_ Q1(b). READ 1 Cor 12:12-17 AND DISCUSS OUR INDIVIDUAL PLACE IN THE BODY OF CHRIST
The church is composed of people from different backgrounds with differing
gifts and abilities (Talents). Despite our differences, all believers in Christ have one
thing in common, which is faith in Christ. On this essential truth, the church finds unity. While individual relationship with Jesus will
always be vital, we must also see ourselves as living members of the body of
Christ, the church. Each gift contributes something necessary to the common life
and growth of the whole body. Remember, that each member of the Church is important and if a seemingly insignificant part is taken away, the whole body is less effective. We must use the gift we have been given and encourage others to use theirs committedly, else the body of believers will be less effective.
Q2. WHAT ARE SOME OF THE OPPORTUNITIES AVAILABLE TO US TO SERVE GOD AND HUMANITY? Eph. 4: 11-15, Matt. 25:34-40; Rom. 12: 6-8.

Our oneness in Christ does not destroy our individuality. The Holy Spirit has given each
Christian special gift for building up the church. God has given His church an
enormous responsibility to make disciples in every nation (Matt. 28:18-20). This involves preaching, teaching, giving, nurturing,
healing, administering, building lives, and ministerial offices such as Apostles, Prophets, Evangelists, Pastors and
Teachers. God has also given gifts of help such as visitation, hospitality, ushers, sanctuary cleaners, administration, etc.
Whatever good things your hands find to do in God’s house, do them wholeheartedly and with total commitment. Look for opportunities to serve.
3(a ) MENTION EXCUSES SOME PEOPLE GIVE FOR NOT BEING COMMITTED TO CHRISTIAN SERVICES.
Some believers in Christ do attempt to justify their lack of commitment to Christian
services, devotion and Worship by giving excuses that are not tenable in the sight
of God. Some examples among others include being too occupied with secular job
and not being appreciated in the local assembly. The class could mention more.
Q3(b). WHAT ARE THE DANGERS OF NOT BEING COMMITTED IN CHRISTIAN SERVICE?
Some of the dangers of not being committed in Christian service include:
- The spiritual life and growth of the believer could be hampered thereby leading to backsliding from the faith.
- There will be no more divine direction, and the fellow could become a victim of satanic manipulation, if the individual does not repent.
- The fellow could therefore possibly slide into apostacy/eternal damnation.
Q4. DISCUSS THE REWARDS OF BEING COMMITTED IN CHRISTIAN SERVICE.
Matt. 24: 45-47; 25: 31-40; Jn. 12:26; Rev. 22:12.
Our heavenly Father is a rewarder of those who diligently, faithfully and committedly serve Him. Every committed servant in Christian service shall receive commendation from the Lord now and in the world to come,
He/she will be made a ruler over God’s heritage. In this present earth,
committed people shall receive the blessing of inner peace, joy and satisfaction resulting from doing the will of the Father. They will be
further equipped and prepared for more fruitful services. They will be blessed and
become a blessing to fellow believers and others.
So, make up your mind to get into work for the Lord with total commitment. Stop being
a “bench warmer in the house of God.
DAILY LIVING APPLICATION
The need for the believers in Christ Jesus to be committed to Christian services is clearly
highlighted in the scriptures.
In reality, Christian commitment in contemporary society is faced with a lot of
challenges and even threats within and without, such that some Christians like the
Laodicean church are becoming neither cold nor hot. However, we are admonished to repent and return to our first love for Christ.
What is your role in the church today? Are you a spectator or are you involved actively in
God’s work in the place of total commitment?
Don’t be discouraged in group assignment even if you are the only person available, do the work without grumbling and resentment. You are not being cheated for doing the work alone. Thank God for the opportunity to serve.
Remember to obtain grace and strength daily from the Holy Spirit as you commit yourself
to Christian services. Resist the temptation to backslide from serving the Lord.
MEMORY VERSE: 1 Cor. 15:58
“Therefore, my beloved brethren, be ye steadfast, unmovable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, for as much as ye know that your labour is not in vain in the Lord”
