Memorise: Let the elders that rule well be counted worthy of double honour, especially they who labour in the word and doctrine. 1 Timothy 5:17

BIBLE READING: 1 Timothy 5:17-19

17 Let the elders that rule well be counted worthy of double honour, especially they who labour in the word and doctrine.

18 For the scripture saith, Thou shalt not muzzle the ox that treadeth out the corn. And, The labourer is worthy of his reward.

19 Against an elder receive not an accusation, but before two or three witnesses.

Bible Reading In One Year: Isaiah 10-12; Galatians 5:1-26

MESSAGE:

It is unfortunate that proper home training, especially how to treat elders is lacking among children of God. God expects us to treat elders with great humility. For instance, when you see an elder carrying some load, it is expected of you to assist in carrying them. But these days, out would see children walk past and pretend they saw nothing.

Similarly, if you are sitting down in Church or in the bus and there are no more seats, and you see an elder standing, you should rise and offer your seat. You shouldn’t allow an elder to greet you first, you should always greet them first. If you are walking on the stairs or an narrow place and an elder is coming, you should stop and give the elder way rather than push him aside or squeeze your way through.

1 Timothy 5:1-2 tells us not to rebuke an elder. Even if an elder is wrong, it is wrong of you to rebuke him/her like you would your mate. When dealing with elders, you can either receive blessings or curses from them, so mind how you treat them.

Key Point:

Your attitude to elders will determine if you will be blessed or curses.

Hymn: When We Walk With The Lord

  1. When we walk with the Lord
    In the light of His Word,
    What a glory He sheds on our way
    While we do His good will,
    He abides with us still,
    And with all who will trust and obey.

Refrain:
Trust and obey,
For there’s no other way
To be happy in Jesus,
But to trust and obey.

  1. Not a shadow can rise,
    Not a cloud in the skies,
    But His smile quickly drives it away;
    Not a doubt or a fear,
    Not a sigh or a tear,
    Can abide while we trust and obey.
  2. Not a burden we bear,
    Not a sorrow we share,
    But our toil He doth richly repay;
    Not a grief or a loss,
    Not a frown or a cross,
    But is blessed if we trust and obey.
  3. But we never can prove
    The delights of His love
    Until all on the altar we lay;
    For the favor He shows,
    For the joy He bestows,
    Are for them who will trust and obey.
  4. Then in fellowship sweet
    We will sit at His feet,
    Or we’ll walk by His side in the way;
    What He says we will do,
    Where He sends we will go;
    Never fear, only trust and obey.
