Memorise: And he said unto them, Take heed, and beware of covetousness: for a man’s life consisteth not in the abundance of the things which he possesseth. Luke 12:15

READ: Exodus 20:17

17 Thou shalt not covet thy neighbour’s house, thou shalt not covet thy neighbour’s wife, nor his manservant, nor his maidservant, nor his ox, nor his ass, nor any thing that is thy neighbour’s.

Bible In One Year: 2 Kings 18-19; John 6:22-71

MESSAGE:

Covetousness is a sin before God. Covetousness is the strong desire to have something that is not yours. When you see someone else with a new phone and all you can think about is how to take over the ownership of that phone, you are covetous. Covetousness leads to stealing or scheming to get things that are not yours.

An example if a covetous person in the Bible was Achan (Joshua 7:1-26). Just because of one covetous fellow amongst the Israelites, God turned His back against the entire nation and they suffered great defeat. If He could turn His back on the entire nation just because of one covetous fellow, then you can see how much He hates covetousness. A covetous person cannot experience the grace and favour of God because God will turn His back on such a person. There are always consequences for being covetous; King David coveted Uriah’s wife and a curse was placed on him such that the sword has still not departed from His lineage till date. God hates covetousness. You may desire what belongs to others but pray to God to provide yours for you.

Prayer Point:

Father, if there is any seed of covetousness in my life, please uproot it now in Jesus’ name.

Hymn 3:

1.When we walk with the Lord in the light of His Word,
What a glory He sheds on our way!
While we do His good will,
He abides with us still,
And with all who will trust and obey.

Chorus:
Trust and obey, for there’s no other way
To be happy in Jesus, but to trust and obey.

2.Not a shadow can rise, not a cloud in the skies,
But His smile quickly drives it away;
Not a doubt or a fear, not a sigh or a tear,
Can abide while we trust and obey.

3.Not a burden we bear, not a sorrow we share,
But our toil He doth richly repay;
Not a grief or a loss, not a frown or a cross,
But is blessed if we trust and obey.

4.But we never can prove the delights of His love
Until all on the altar we lay;
For the favor He shows, for the joy He bestows,
Are for them who will trust and obey.

5.Then in fellowship sweet we will sit at His feet,
Or we’ll walk by His side in the way;
What He says we will do, where He sends we will go;
Never fear, only trust and obey.
