Cultivating a Godly Character(1)

Dear Reader,

You are welcome to another great month! My prayer for you is that God will establish you in all aspects of your life in Jesus’ name. This week, I will focus on ‘Cultivating a Godly Character’.

In life, there are times are seasons. As a teenager, you must understand that you are in a season. The Word says: To everything there is a season… (Ecclesiastes 3:1). Therefore, note that you cannot be a teenager forever. So, to stand out among your peers, you must have an outstanding character. There is no better time to build a strong Christian character than now, which is your teenage years. Without any doubt, character is crucial!

What is Character?

Character is simply defined as someone’s way of behaviour.  It is a pattern of behaviour that shows moral strength, self-discipline and dignity. Your character is your lifestyle. The Word says: For yourselves know how ye ought to follow us: for we behaved not ourselves disorderly among you (2 Thessalonians 3:7). A good character is a platform for sustainable exploits and a glorious future. It is a seed that guarantees a good and enviable harvest in later years.

Therefore, if you desire to be different, it is important to consciously and deliberately cultivate a godly character. There are certain fundamental truths about character, and a good understanding of them will enhance your reasoning.

Some Fundamental Truths about Character:

  • Character Is your True Beauty. To lack character is to be naked, to stink and be ugly. Beauty is not just in those outfits of yours, fashionable shoes, jewellry or make-up that you wear; character is your true beauty.
  • Character is not a Gift. A good character is not a gift; it is cultivated. So,if you want to live a life with a difference, you must consciously cultivate a good character.
  • Character is a Matter of the Heart. Character actually begins in the heart, and it flows out. That is why Jesus said if you cleanse the inside of a cup, the outside would also be clean (Matthew 23:26). Character is essentially a matter of the inside, which eventually finds expression on the outside.

However, a godly character can only be triggered by the help of the Holy Spirit, which is the privilege of those born again. If you are not born again, please say this prayer of faith: Dear Lord, I come to You today. I am a sinner. Forgive me my sins. Cleanse me with Your precious Blood. I accept You as my Lord and Saviour. Now, I know I am born again!
