I remember as a boy seeing very moving stories about illiterate adults finally learning to read. Yet, lately I have come to realize that for most of history the majority of people were illiterate.
Few gifts are greater than learning to read. Yet sadly, the overwhelming majority of American adults read very little, especially men. But it is really true: “The person who does not read is no better than the person who cannot read.”
This is most true when it comes to reading God’s Word. If a nation’s president wrote you a personal note, don’t you think you would read it? Yet, the Creator of the Universe – your Creator – has written you a love letter that is overflowing with wisdom, truth, and practical ways to lead a meaningful life. Yet in many homes, that letter is never opened; it’s just sitting on a shelf drawing dust.
“The person who does not read is no better off than a person who cannot read.” This has never been more true than when it comes to God’s letter of love, written to you and to me – the Bible.
Psalm 119: 105 describes Scripture as a light in the darkness that guides our steps (my paraphrase). Do you feel a little lost and directionless? Then pick up God’s Word. Let the truth of Scripture be a light and guide as you walk this road of life.
