Decommited

“By this all men will know that you are My disciples, if you have love for one another.”

In recent years, a word has come into vogue that is strange to me. It’s the word “decommit.” It seems to contradict itself. But as odd as it sounds, it’s a fitting word for a “me-first” culture, as people decommit from contracts, companies, schools, even relationships. Yet the call of Christ is the total opposite of this cultural trend. We are called to commitment – to loyalty, devotion and faithfulness – to Jesus Christ first and foremost. He then instructs us to commit to one another in love. This love for others is the birthmark of the Christian. When we love as He has loved us and give ourselves to loving and serving one another, we display a powerful witness to the world – the witness of a personal relationship with God Himself through Jesus Christ. And that’s a relationship from which we would never decommit!
