“And he sought to see Jesus who he was; and could not for the press, because he was little of stature. And he ran before, and climbed up into a sycamore tree to see him: for he was to pass that way.”
Luke 19:3, 4 (KJV)
Beloved, I want you to know that there is no way you will make effort in serving God that God will not notice it. There is no way! Zacchaeus climbed on top of the tree in order to see Jesus. And Jesus noticed him because our efforts don’t go unnoticed by God. There was something about this man that drew him to Jesus. There was something about him that made Jesus to stop the whole crusade team when He got to the tree, looked up and called him down. Deep calls unto deep. When there is a hunger for God; God knows. When there is a true repentance, you can’t look far for it. You will see it very clearly. Jesus looked up, and saw him, and said unto him, ‘Zacchaeus, make haste, and come down; for today I must abide at thy house!’
The people around who saw it murmured that He had gone to be a guest to a sinner. You see, there would always be people who would murmur and complain. It did not start today. They murmured in the time of Moses. There were murmurers also in the time of Jesus Christ. People who will talk. Jesus said John the Baptist came neither eating nor drinking, they said he had a devil. He came eating and drinking and they called him a glutton and a winebibber. There is really nothing you would do; people would always talk.
Now, they said He had gone to stay with sinners. ‘Doesn’t He know that this man is a sinner in the city?’ But what they didn’t know is that something truly took place in the life of Zacchaeus. Something happened to him. To the people, it felt like nothing happened. But something did happen to him. Without Jesus giving him instructions, he said “half of my goods, I will give to the poor. If I have taken anything by any false means from anyone, I restore it four-fold. I am making restitution.” This is true repentance.
