‘Deeply disturbed’: Democrats, Republicans react to second Trump assassination attempt
Leaders on both sides of the political aisle reacted to reports of the U.S. Secret Service firing at a man with an AK-style rifle near the Trump International Golf Club in Florida believed to have been planning to assassinate former President Donald Trump.
During a joint press conference with the FBI and Secret Service officials, Sheriff Ric Bradshaw of Palm Beach shared that an agent spotted the muzzle of the rifle and fired shots at the gunman on Sunday. According to Bradshaw, the shooter was between 300 to 500 yards away from the former president.
Authorities identified Ryan Wesley Routh as the gunman. The suspect has been charged with federal gun crimes. Authorities are working to determine a potential motive.
This latest incident comes just two months after the July 13 attempted assassination of Trump during a rally in Butler, Pennsylvania. The shooter at the Butler rally injured Trump’s ear, but he did not kill him.
The gunman at the Florida golf course attempted to flee the scene in an SUV but was stopped on I-95 and taken into custody. Steven Cheung, a campaign spokesman, confirmed that Trump is safe following the shooting incident.
Here’s how Republicans and Democrats reacted to the second assassination attempt against Trump.
JD Vance
Trump’s vice presidential running mate, Sen. J.D. Vance, R-Ohio, said on Sunday that he was glad Trump is safe following the apparent assassination attempt.
The Ohio lawmaker stated on social media that he spoke to Trump before news of the incident became public, saying that Trump was “amazingly, in good spirits.”
“Still much we don’t know, but I’ll be hugging my kids extra tight tonight and saying a prayer of gratitude,” Vance stated.
Joe Biden
President Joe Biden spoke to reporters on Monday about the apparent assassination attempt against Trump.
Biden stated that the U.S. Secret Service “needs more help,” adding that the agency may need additional personnel, as ABC News reported.
“Thank God the president’s OK,” Biden stated.
In a Sunday statement, the president commended the Secret Service and the agency’s partners for protecting Trump and those around him. Biden also acknowledged that there is currently an “active investigation” into the recent shooting incident.
After the assassination attempt against the former president in July, Secret Service Director Kimberly Cheatle resigned following criticism from members of both sides of the political aisle. Republicans and Democrats expressed dissatisfaction over Cheatle’s answers during a U.S. House of Representatives committee hearing about the assassination attempt.
Elise Stefanik
Rep. Elise Stefanik, R-N.Y., expressed gratitude toward the members of law enforcement who ensured the former president’s safety.
As Sheriff Ric Bradshaw of Palm Beach revealed during a Sunday press conference, the gunman had a clear line of sight of the fifth, sixth and seventh holes at the golf course.
“I am grateful to hear that President Trump is safe following today’s reported assassination attempt in Florida. I join in thanks for our hardworking law enforcement officers working to keep President Trump, his family, and his team safe,” Stefanik said in a Sunday statement.
“However, we must ask ourselves how an assassin was allowed to get this close to President Trump again?” Stefanik asked. “There continues to be a lack of answers for the horrific assassination attempt in Pennsylvania and we expect there to be a clear explanation of what happened today in Florida.”
“Thankfully, God continues to watch over President Trump. As Americans, we must unite behind him in November to protect our republic and bring peace back to the world.”
Kamala Harris
The 2024 Democratic presidential hopeful, Vice President Kamala Harris, said in a Sunday statement that she is “deeply disturbed” by the news of the apparent assassination attempt against Trump. Harris declared that she condemns political violence.
“We all must do our part to ensure that this incident does not lead to more violence,” she stated.
“I am thankful that former President Trump is safe. I commend the U.S. Secret Service and law enforcement partners for their vigilance. As President Biden said, our Administration will ensure the Secret Service has every resource, capability, and protective measure necessary to carry out its critical mission.”
During ABC News’ presidential debate last Tuesday, Trump blamed the rhetoric of the Biden administration and other Democrats for the attempt on his life at the Pennslyvania rally in July. Trump said that he believes he “took a bullet to the head” because of the things Democrats have said about him, such as Trump being a “threat to Democracy.”
Ron DeSantis
Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, a Republican who ran against Trump during the 2024 GOP presidential primary, revealed his state would conduct its own investigation into the assassination attempt in Florida. During a Monday news conference, DeSantis said he believes there were “multiple violations of state law.”
On Sunday, the Florida governor wrote in a Sunday X post that the public deserves answers about how the shooter was able to get so close to the president at the golf course.
“We also believe that there’s a need to make sure that the truth about all this comes out in a way, you know, that’s credible,” DeSantis said during a news conference Monday, according to The Orlando Sentinel. “I mean, I look at the federal government, with all due respect to them, those same agencies that are prosecuting Trump in that jurisdiction are now going to be investigating this?”
