DESIRE AND COMMIT YOURSELF TO GROW

1Peter 2:1-3 (TPT)

So abandon every form of evil, deceit, hypocrisy, feelings of jealousy and slander. In the same way that nursing infants cry for milk, you must intensely crave the pure spiritual milk of God’s Word. For this “milk” will cause you to grow into maturity, fully nourished and strong for life— especially now that you have had a taste of the goodness of the Lord Jehovah and have experienced his kindness.

We saw in yesterday’s study that only by walking in the Spirit are we empowered to overcome the lusts of the flesh. Our text today communicates a similar thought.

The only way we can overcome and abandon every sin and negative behaviour in our lives is when we are growing spiritually. It is therefore not enough for us to desire to abandon and overcome sin; we must have a strong desire to grow spiritually and we must be committed to doing the things that will help us grow spiritually. Our text above also shows us one major thing we must desire and be committed to filling ourselves with – the Word of God. One major reason why many believers are not growing as they should be is that they do not have a strong desire to fill themselves with God’s Word.

We must desire and crave God’s Word just as little babies crave milk, and we must make every deliberate effort to study and meditate on God’s Word. We must renew our minds with it, we must declare it, we must pray in line with it and we must live in line with it. We must desire God’s Word more than everything else and our desire for it must keep growing, (Job 23:12). Just as a child walks better as he grows, as we also grow spiritually, we walk better in the Spirit.

Prayer:
Dear Father, I desire to grow spiritually so I can walk better in the Spirit. Please help me to increase in my desire for your Word.
