Now it shall come to pass, if you diligently obey the voice of the Lord your God, to observe carefully all His commandments which I command you today, that the Lord your God will set you high above all nations of the earth

During a heated moment at the Constitutional Convention of 1787, many delegates reluctantly believed that they would not be able to come to a consensus and that they should each return to their own colony.

At that moment, the convention’s oldest delegate, 81-year-old Benjamin Franklin, spoke up: “We have been assured, sir, in the sacred writings, that except the Lord build the house they labor in vain who build it. I firmly believe this – and I also believe that without His concurring aid, we shall succeed in this political building no better than the builders of Babel: we shall be divided by our little partial local interests; our projects will be confounded, and we ourselves a reproach and bye word down to future ages.” The impasse was broken by prayer, and the Constitution was completed.

Franklin understood that, unless this fledgling government was built on the foundation of the Creator, it would fail. The colonies could remain free only through His ongoing benevolence. America has wandered from these early truths, and his words have become reality.

He knew then what we must remember now: if this republic is going to survive – if we can keep it – we must bow our knee before the King of heaven and kneel before His throne of grace and mercy. Unless the Lord rebuilds this house, we labor in vain.

Today’s Blessing:

May the Lord bless you and keep you. May the Lord make His face to shine upon you and be gracious unto you and give you His peace. Remember the liberty our forefathers brought, and commit to keep it by God’s grace. It was for freedom we have been set free!
