DIVINE COMPASSION AND RESTORATION

Isaiah 42:1-3 (LB)

See my servant, whom I uphold; my Chosen One in whom I delight. I have put my Spirit upon him; he will reveal justice to the nations of the world. He will be gentle—he will not shout nor quarrel in the streets. He will not break the bruised reed, nor quench the dimly burning flame. He will encourage the fainthearted, those tempted to despair. He will see full justice given to all who have been wronged.

In our text above, the prophet is speaking about Jesus, who was to come and the type of things that Jesus would do by the Spirit of God. One very striking statement he makes is that, “he will not break the bruised reed, nor quench the dimly burning flame”. A bruised reed is a plant that is weak and about to die and a dimly burning flame is a candle or lamp whose fire is about to go out. By saying, “he will not break the bruised reed, nor quench the dimly burning flame,” the prophet was saying that Jesus will not
give up on people. He will not discourage the weak or put out the fire of those whose fires are about to go out. Instead, He will encourage and strengthen them to grow and burn brighter.

By the Spirit of God, God has anointed you and sent you into the world just like He sent Jesus. God also expects you to give strength and hope to the weak by being compassionate and restoring those who are on the verge of giving up. Real strength is seen in what you do in trying times and how you treat those who are weak.

Many times, it seems easier to break than to build, to condemn than to commend and to despise than to encourage. But God wants us to yield to His Spirit and do His will and what is right at all times. Like David, when people who are in distress, in debt and discontented come around you, you will encourage them and raise a mighty army out of them, (1Sam.22:1-2).

Prayer:
Heavenly Father, please use me to encourage, strengthen and build up the lives of the weak and fainthearted around me.
