But the Lord said to Samuel, Look not on his appearance or at the height of his stature, for I have rejected him. For the Lord sees not as man sees; for man looks on the outward appearance, but the Lord looks on the heart.— 1 Samuel 16:7 (AMPC)

When we choose the people we think we want to be in relationship with—whether professionally or personally—sometimes we find out later that our choices were less than wise. Many years ago, I was insecure and always wanted to be friends with the “popular” people, which quite often ended with me getting hurt. Thankfully, since then God has helped me so much; now I’m able to find my security in Him, and so can you.

If you’re wanting to grow in the area of relationships, ask God to give you divine connections. He might choose friendships for you that you would’ve never picked for yourself, but I want to encourage you: learn to look beyond the appearance of others to see their heart. Someone may look good on the outside but actually be a nightmare to be with; while another person may not appeal to you at first glance, and yet when you get to know them, they’ll end up being one of the best friends you ever had. As you listen for the Holy Spirit’s voice, He’ll show you what to do in all your relationships.

Prayer Starter: Father, only You know others’ hearts, and only You have the wisdom I need to know the best relationships for me. Thank You for connecting me with the right people, both professionally and personally. In Jesus’ Name, amen.
