DO YOU KNOW WHAT MANNER OF SPIRIT YOU ARE OF?

*Luke 9:54-56 (NKJV)

And when His disciples James and John saw this, they said, “Lord, do You want us to command fire to come down from heaven and consume them, just as Elijah did?” But He turned and rebuked them, and said, “You do not know what manner of spirit you are of. For the Son of Man did not come to destroy men’s lives but to save them.” And they went to another village.*

Jesus sent some of His disciples to a Samaritan village to make some preparations for Him, but the people of that village rejected Jesus and did not allow them to make any preparations for Him. The disciples could not understand why and in their anger they were ready to call down fire on those villagers, just as Elijah did. Jesus’ response to His disciples was epic. He rebuked them for ever having such a thought and he told them, “You do not know what manner of spirit you are of. For the Son of Man did not come to destroy men’s lives but to save them.”

What is your reaction like when you are rejected, badly treated, or provoked in some way or the other? Is your reaction born out of the life and love of Christ in you? Or do you forget the manner of spirit you are of? Jesus said, “Father, forgive them for they know not what they do.”

Many times, when we are hurt or provoked, we forget that it is no longer we that are living but Christ that’s living through us. As such, some fear and weakness/insecurity may seem to inspire our negative reaction. But the Bible says, “… God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind,” (2Tim. 1:7). The power God has given you in Christ is not to destroy lives, but to save them. Walk in God’s wisdom and sound mind in you, then desire and pray for their salvation.

Prayer:
Heavenly Father, please help me to control myself whenever I am hurt or proved. He me to always reflect on the life and love of Christ.
