Memorise: It is better not to vow than to make a vow and not fulfill it. Ecclesiastes 5:5

Read: Ecclesiastes 5:1-4

1 Guard your steps when you go to the house of God. Go near to listen rather than to offer the sacrifice of fools, who do not know that they do wrong.
2 Do not be quick with your mouth, do not be hasty in your heart to utter anything before God. God is in heaven and you are on earth, so let your words be few.
3 As a dream comes when there are many cares, so the speech of a fool when there are many words.
4 When you make a vow to God, do not delay in fulfilling it. He has no pleasure in fools; fulfill your vow.

Bible In One Year: Genesis 20-22; Matthew 7

MESSAGE:

Taking a vow and not fulfilling it is a deadly habit. Our memory verse says it to better not to vow than to vow and not fulfil it. Some people vow without having the means to pay up the vow. For instance, it will be foolish of a student to make a vow that is higher than his or her pocket money or one that would require giving up of school fees. At your stage, you should make a vow based on your capacity.

Some others make a vow, have the capacity to fulfil it but would rather not. This is because when they wanted something desperately, they made vows in a hurry, without thinking of the means to fulfil it. Then, after God has played His part, they find it hard to play theirs. Some others forget about the vow completely. God does not joke. Think before you make a vow. If you have made any vow to God in the past and you are yet to fulfil it, do so today without further delay.

Key Point:

It is better not to make a vow than to make one and not fulfil it

Hymn 20: When We Walk With The Lord

  1. When we walk with the Lord
    In the light of His Word,
    What a glory He sheds on our way!
    While we do His good will,
    He abides with us still,
    And with all who will trust and obey.

Refrain:
Trust and obey,
For there’s no other way
To be happy in Jesus,
But to trust and obey.

  1. Not a shadow can rise,
    Not a cloud in the skies,
    But His smile quickly drives it away;
    Not a doubt or a fear,
    Not a sigh or a tear,
    Can abide while we trust and obey.
  2. Not a burden we bear,
    Not a sorrow we share,
    But our toil He doth richly repay;
    Not a grief or a loss,
    Not a frown or a cross,
    But is blessed if we trust and obey.
  3. But we never can prove
    The delights of His love
    Until all on the altar we lay;
    For the favor He shows,
    For the joy He bestows,
    Are for them who will trust and obey.
  4. Then in fellowship sweet
    We will sit at His feet,
    Or we’ll walk by His side in the way;
    What He says we will do,
    Where He sends we will go;
    Never fear, only trust and obey.
