FORGIVE OTHERS LIKE GOD HAS FORGIVEN YOU
Ephesians 1:7 (KJV, GNB) John 15:12-14 (NLT), 1Cor.13:4-5 (NLT) In whom we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of sins, according to the riches of his grace; *For by the blood of Christ we are set free, that is, our sins are forgiven. How great is the grace of God, *This is my commandment: Love each other in the same way I have loved you. There is no greater love than to lay down one’s life for one’s friends.*Love is patient and kind. Love is not jealous or boastful or proud or rude. It does not demand its own way. It is not irritable, and it keeps no record of being wronged.
By virtue of the life of God that is in you, you have the ability to forgive others just the same way that God has forgiven you in Christ. God wants us to understand and also reflect the great love and forgiveness that He has shown us in Christ. In the New Living Translation, 2Corinthians 5:19 says, “… God was in Christ, reconciling the world to himself, no longer counting people’s sins against them. And he gave us this wonderful message of reconciliation.”

Do you know that God did not wait for us to ask for forgiveness or to deserve His forgiveness before deciding to forgive us? He chose to forgive us on His own. He has forgiven us because of His great love for us and the sacrifice of Christ on the cross. Our role is mainly to receive this forgiveness that has been freely offered us because of Jesus’ sacrifice for us. God did this to reconcile us to Himself.
Now, God wants us to have this same attitude towards people that offend us. He doesn’t want us to keep records of wrongs done against us and He definitely doesn’t want us to pay people back for the wrongs they have done to us. Being merciful is a major aspect of showing love (Eph.2:4) and God wants us to be merciful unto others, just as He is merciful to us. You cannot do this by your own power or might. The Holy Spirit is at work in you, enabling you to grow in love, (Gal.5:22, Rom.5:5). Trust and rely on Him. Never lose sight of God’s great love and mercies towards you. The more you focus on how merciful God is to you, the more you will be motivated to show mercy unto others. Knowing God’s love for us fills us with God’s fullness, Eph.3:19.
Prayer:
Dear Father, I receive your grace to forgive people even before they offend me. Empower me by your Spirit to love and forgive like you have done.
