Galloping Gertie

JANUARY 4, 2021

He gave him the plans of all that the Spirit had put in his mind.
1 Chronicles 28:12, NIV

 Recommended Reading: 2 Corinthians 4:16-18

The Tacoma Narrows Bridge opened with great fanfare over Puget Sound near Seattle on July 1, 1940. Its designer, Leon Moisseiff, called it the “most beautiful bridge in the world.” But not when the wind blew. The bridge swayed so badly local motorists called it “Galloping Gertie.” The entire structure collapsed four months after it opened, and the collapse was caught on film. Watching the bridge lurch and weave in the wind before disintegrating is enough to produce nightmares, though thankfully everyone got off the bridge in time—except for a dog.[1]

In 1 Chronicles 28, King David gave his son, Solomon, the plans for building the temple in Jerusalem. God had revealed these plans to David, and Solomon carried them out in exact detail. The same God who drew up the plans for the temple also has a detailed blueprint for your life. When we seek and follow His plans, we’re able to withstand the winds and be a bridge for the Gospel of Christ.

This is the reason why we never collapse. The outward man does indeed suffer wear and tear, but every day the inward man receives fresh strength.

J. B. Phillips, paraphrase of 2 Corinthians 4:16
