But he said, ‘I will not let You go unless You bless me!’

Jacob was alone in the camp, dreading the confrontation with his brother, Esau. Thirty years before, Esau had vowed to kill him for stealing the blessing that belonged to him.

A Man appeared in the camp, and they wrestled throughout the night. This Man was God Himself! As the sun rose, He was not prevailing and demanded that Jacob release Him.

How could God not prevail? Even when God demanded that he stop, Jacob’s stubbornness and desperation would not relent! He would not let go until the Man blessed him.

From conception, that blessing is all Jacob desired. He fought for it in his mother’s womb. He grappled with his twin as they were born. He took advantage of his brother and deceived his own father to lay claim to it. He grabbed hold of Esau’s heel at birth, and he took hold of God, contending for the lifelong desire of his heart.

Every struggle endures for a season. Every wrestling match comes to a conclusion, and God will not wrestle with us indefinitely.

Jacob would not turn loose. He held on for what only God could give. Hurting and exhausted, he refused to give up until God relented. And the Lord responded in that moment of desperation. Do not let go until His blessing breaks through to you.

Today’s Blessing:

May the Lord bless you and keep you. May the Lord make His face to shine upon you and be gracious unto you and give you His peace. Hold onto God for the blessing that you desire. Prevail in prayer. Stand still, and see the great things God will do for you!
