“Very early in the morning, while it was still dark, Jesus got up, left the house and went off to a solitary place, where He prayed.” – Mark 1:35

October 13, 2020

We are living in uncertain times. You probably feel the “wear and tear” of 2020 in every area of your life. Even small, normal tasks can feel overwhelming. The news constantly reminds us of the worldwide pandemic we are living through, the elevated racial tensions in America, and the upcoming U.S. presidential election. Everyone and everything feels divided. Our minds and bodies are working overtime to keep up.

With so much going on, it’s hard to not feel anxious in times like these. Anxiety, however, can look different for everyone. Some may turn to action and busyness as a form of distraction; while others can become overwhelmed, only to freeze and do nothing.

While Jesus didn’t experience COVID-19, Mark 1 shows us that there were very pressing needs all around Him. People “brought to Him all that were sick or oppressed by demons. And the whole city was gathered together at the door” (vs. 32-33). Imagine an entire city waiting on Jesus for healing or to speak with Him. What did He do? Did He become overwhelmed by the need and start healing all the more? Did He shut down?

He got up, left the house where He was staying, and He prayed. When the world’s needs are pressing in, Jesus showed us exactly what to doSpend time with our Father.

God always loves to spend time with us. So, when He calls you to do something, you can be sure it’s for your eternal good. What are some of the benefits of spending time with God?

  1. You’ll find yourself staying closer to God throughout your day.
  2. You will be better able to keep your priorities in line.
  3. You will receive enlightenment, wisdom, and strength.
  4. You will be filled with a sense of peace and contentment.

If Jesus needed time with His Father, how much more do we? When you feel overwhelmed by the world around you, don’t shut down or go into overdrive. Instead, spend time with God. Early in the morning is best– before the demands of the day set in. When this time with God is kept, you’ll be filled with all you need to take on your day.
