GET RID OF WORKS MINDEDNESS

“And he answering said to his father, Lo, these many years do I serve thee, neither transgressed I at any time thy commandment: and yet thou never gavest me a kid, that I might make merry with my friends:” Luke 15:29 (KJV)

As long as you approach God with a works (performance) mentality you will always find it difficult to get anything from God. You have nothing to boast about before God because when you come with your works to qualify you, He will tell you that they are ‘’filthy rags.’’ before Him (Isaiah 64:6).

In Luke 15:11-32, we see the account of the parable of the prodigal son. There was a huge celebration and restoration ceremony at home when the prodigal son returned home. The Father did not even comment about his misdemeanor. The father asked him no question When the older son returned from work and heard about the celebration, he became angry and refused to enter the house. When the father asked him what was wrong, he began to complain about how he had served for several years and was never appreciated by calling for a celebration for him. I can hear him ask the father: “How can you go out of your way to call for this kind of celebration for the one who has so much disrespected you. He does not deserve it”. He then began to read out all his credentials and works. In other words, if anyone deserves it, he should be the one.

That is exactly the mindset God wants us to get rid of. What he refused to realise is that all the father had was his already, without him working for it. Get rid of work-consciousness, learn to enjoy grace. That is the life we are called into. The price has been paid and everything is available to us.

Luke 15:31. It is not of him that willeth or runneth but God that showeth mercy (Romans 9:16)
