GO THE EXTRA MILE

“And when she had done giving him drink, she said, I will draw water for thy camels also, until they have done drinking”. Genesis 24:19 (KJV)

When we first gave our lives to Christ, the church practically became our home. We were ready to do anything that needed to be done gladly, not for reward, but out of genuine love for God. Service was simply a privilege. Beloved, I am a living testimony that service pays. God rewards handsomely.

Unfortunately, now, we have a clientele of believers who are waiting for a reward before service. I call them a negotiating generation. When there is something to do in the house of God, the first question is: what will you give me in return for this service? How much will I be paid? Is it any wonder they collect the money and still struggle?

Our text talks about Abraham’s servant who went in search of a wife for Isaac. Look at his request to God. How do you ask God for a lady who will not only fetch water and give you to drink but will fetch and give all your camels too? Camels drink a lot of water, so that is a huge task.

Stop and think, if you were Rebekah, would you have offered to draw water for the camels? The easiest thing for her to do would have been to give him the pitcher and ask him to help himself, that would have been a generous offer, but Rebekah had been well taught to go the extra mile. Beloved, there is a huge blessing in going the extra mile in the service of God.

In which area are you involved in the church? Are you just content doing the least required? Are you serving wholeheartedly and joyfully? Are you glad that God counted you worthy to serve? Or are you there negotiating your pay and making demands on God? Be like Rebekah and learn to go the extra mile. You know the story, Rebekah was not only blessed with gifts, she got married to Isaac, and her son, Jacob, is in the lineage of Jesus. What an honour, all from the place of service.
