GO THE EXTRA MILE FOR OTHERS

Deuteronomy 22:1-4 (NIV)

If you see your brother’s ox or sheep straying, do not ignore it but be sure to take it back to him. If the brother does not live near you or if you do not know who he is, take it home with you and keep it until he comes looking for it. Then give it back to him. Do the same if you find your brother’s donkey or his cloak or anything he loses. Do not ignore it. If you see your brother’s donkey or his ox fallen on the road, do not ignore it. Help him get it to its feet.

One major way to show love and care to others is to care about the things that they care about and to be concerned about the things that are impacting them in any way. In our text above, God was telling the Israelites through Moses about going the extra mile to secure something that belongs to their brother or neighbour. Whenever we have the opportunity, God wants us to do good to all men; especially fellow believers, (Gal.6:10). How well do you treat others? How would Jesus treat them if He were in your shoes? Do not be like the Priest and Levite who saw a badly wounded man, but passed by him for whatever reason and continued on their way. Rather, be like the Samaritan who had compassion on the wounded man, stopped his journey and went the extra mile to ensure that he was nursed back to health, (Luke 10:29-35).

In our world today, so many people are becoming increasingly selfish and self-centered. Many times, people are not willing to go out of their way to do things for others that they themselves would love to be done for them. But thank God that there are still some people who have even sacrificed their lives for the security and safety of others. Allow the selfless love that Jesus has shown you to motivate you to show selfless love to others. Do not only consider what you are going to gain. Think of what others will gain and what God will gain. Do not refuse to help someone simply because what they are going through does not directly affect you. There are things God has allowed you to go through to prepare you to be of help and a blessing to others. 2Corinthians 1:3-4 shows us that God comforts us in all our troubles so that we may comfort others. Always remember that every act of love to someone else can open a door for you to influence them with the gospel and the love of God.

Prayer:
Heavenly Father, please help me to go the extra mile to care and show love unto others, just like Jesus would do.
