God Wants You to Be Content

Hebrews 13:5-6 (NKJV) Let your conduct be without covetousness; be content with such things as you have. For He Himself has said, “I will never leave you nor forsake you.” So we may boldly say: “The Lord is my helper; I will not fear. What can man do to me?

1 Timothy 6:6 & 10 (LB) For the love of money is the first step toward all kinds of sin. Some people have even turned away from God because of their love for it, and as a result have pierced themselves with many sorrows.

One of the primary reasons for greed and covetousness among believers today is the manner in which our values and definitions of things have been corrupted by the wrong thinking patterns of the world. The Bible refers to “… people of corrupt mind, who have been robbed of the truth and who think that godliness is a means to financial gain,” 1 Tim. 6:5 (NIV). Jesus was very clear when He said, “… Watch out and guard yourselves from every kind of greed; because your true life is not made up of the things you own, no matter how rich you may be,” Luke 12:15 (GNB). Do not allow the cares of this life and the deceitfulness of riches to make you unfruitful by choking the word and the life of God out of you, Matt. 13:22. Riches always try to deceive us into believing that when we have them, we will be satisfied and be able to do all things. This is why some people now worship riches and continue to drown in sin and corruption. Another word for the love for money is covetousness and our second text above indicates that the love of money is the first step towards all kinds of sins. Colossians 3:5 says that covetousness is idolatry.

When Paul said, “I can do all things through Christ that strengthens me,” he was referring to being content, Phil. 4:10-13. Control your appetite. God is your provider. Work hard and smart but trust God to supply all your needs and to bless and increase you. Nobody can cheat you. You must do your best not to be afraid. God is your portion and He will preserve your lot, Psa. 16:5. Because God is your helper, what you have will be sufficient and you will be able to do even more than those who appear to have more than you do. Keep your eyes on God.

Prayer:

My eyes are on you, dear Lord. You are my portion, you are my helper and you are my sufficiency. Help me to remain content and focused on you.
