If you read the Bible cover to cover, you’ll notice the Scriptures talk a good bit about money and possessions. Why is God so concerned with our money and how we use it? Can’t we just spend our hard-earned cash the way we want? And what does God expect when financial hardships leave us wondering how exactly we will pay the bills? Scripture tells us that we can always trust God to have a better plan for our money – one that starts with an attitude of giving expectantly and generously.
The Apostle Paul links this idea of giving expectantly to a farmer who sows his seed and hopes for a plentiful fall harvest. The more seeds the farmer plants, the bigger the crop. The less seeds he plants, the smaller the crop. The farmer plants his seeds in faith, trusting that the right combination of soil, sunlight, and rain will result in abundant crops. He plants expectantly.
Followers of Christ should also give expectantly, trusting that their giving is not in vain. Why? Because their lives are entrusted to God and He will not allow their cheerful giving to go to waste (1 Corinthians 15:58). God’s plan is to bless generous givers abundantly (verse 8). But those blessings might not be financial, because God blesses us in many ways. And the blessings aren’t only meant for the giver. God blesses us so that we might be a blessing to others (Proverbs 11:25).
Our generosity should be a response to the riches God has already given us in Christ! It’s from this attitude that we can give cheerfully and generously, no matter our financial circumstances.
That’s giving God’s way!
