“The shepherds went back, glorifying and praising God for all that they had heard and seen, just as had been told them.” – Luke 2:20
In 1966, the new Metropolitan Opera House opened in New York. It was one of the social events of the 20th Century.
But imagine if the Board of the Metropolitan Opera had said, “For our opening night with the greatest orchestra ever assembled, we’re going to invite all the garbage collectors in the city to be in the audience. Let’s take all those who pick up our trash every day, and let’s fill the opera house with them for this inaugural performance.”
In effect, that is precisely what God did on that first Christmas. He announced the coming of His Son to lowly shepherds who weren’t even permitted to enter the Temple because they were considered ceremonially unclean. They had no social status, yet God sent an angelic host to sing to them and allow them to be the first to learn of the birth of His Son, Jesus.
This is the humility of God. What do we do with a God who humbled Himself to live among us, and who endured death on the Cross on our behalf? We worship Him!
