God’s Love for You Lasts Forever

BY RICK WARREN — AUGUST 20, 2022
FROM THE FOUNDATION OF A LIFE WELL-LIVED

“The LORD is good; his love is eternal and his faithfulness lasts forever.”

Psalm 100:5 (GNT)

Nobody loves you like God loves you. In fact, God says, “I have loved you . . . with an everlasting love. With unfailing love I have drawn you to myself” (Jeremiah 31:3 NLT).

No matter how much people love each other, that love always fails in some way. For example, I love my wife dearly, but I fail her sometimes. I’ve failed my kids despite how much I love them. I love the members of Saddleback Church, but I have failed them at different points.

But the Bible says that God has an everlasting and unfailing love. God even says that his love draws you to him.

You need to understand two aspects of God’s love:

God’s love is unconditional. God’s love doesn’t say, “I love you if . . .” That’s conditional. Conditional love says things like, “I love you if you love me. I love you if you please me. I love you if you’re good looking.” That’s not real love. What happens when someone loses their good looks? What happens when you find someone else more interesting? Do you just stop loving them? That kind of love it conditional love.

But God’s love for you says, “I love you, period. I love you even though you don’t always love me, you’re not always consistent, and you don’t always do the right thing.”

God’s love is consistent. It’s not fickle. It’s not unpredictable. Maybe you grew up with inconsistent parents. Inconsistent parents create insecure kids. A man once said to me, “I never knew if my dad was going to slug me or hug me. He was unpredictable.” That’s inconsistent love.

But with God, you’ll never have to ask, “Will God love me today?” His love is eternal. Psalm 100:5 says, “The LORD is good; his love is eternal and his faithfulness lasts forever” (GNT).

No matter what you’ve done, who you’ve done it with, or how long you’ve done it, God’s love for you will last forever.

Talk It Over

  • Think about a time you loved someone conditionally. What was that condition? What would unconditional love for them look like?
  • How might this week be different if you walked into each day confident of God’s love for you?
  • What steps can you take to deepen your understanding of God’s love?

Have you trusted Jesus with your life?

The Bible says you can get to heaven only by trusting in God through his Son, Jesus Christ. You cannot earn your way into heaven: “It is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God—not by works, so that no one can boast” (Ephesians 2:8-9 NIV).

If you’re ready to confess your sins and to trust Jesus with your life, start with this prayer:

“Dear God, you have promised that if I believe in Jesus, everything I’ve ever done wrong will be forgiven, I will learn the purpose of my life, and you will accept me into your eternal home in heaven one day.

“I confess my sin, and I submit to Jesus as my Savior and Lord. Jesus, I want to follow you and serve you. I humbly commit my life to you and ask you to save me and accept me into your family. In your name I pray. Amen.”
