GOOD CONVERSATIONS

“WHO IS A WISE MAN AND ENDUED WITH KNOWLEDGE AMONG YOU? LET HIM SHEW OUT OF A GOOD CONVERSATION HIS WORKS WITH MEEKNESS OF WISDOM.”

-James 3:13-

Quite a number of couples feel they are having a conversation with their spouse, when all they really are doing is giving out commands and/or instructions they believe must be adhered to. When handling an issue, they say “can we talk?” However, in actuality, they mean “just listen.” You may or may not be guilty of this, but it’s very common and is one of the major causes of communication failure in the home.

A conversation should involve two or more people sharing ideas. That means there should be a time to talk while the other listens, and vice versa. On the contrary, if you do all the talking leaving your spouse to do all the listening, then it is no longer a conversation, it is an instructional session with you as the commandant and your spouse as the rookie.

Healthy marriages are those with healthy communications. This means that both parties are free to talk openly, at all times. It is true that some may be extreme extroverts; in marriage though, certain character traits must be curtailed, especially when such are negative to the relationship.

Someone once said: “A good communicator is always a good listener.” Listening does not just include being quiet therefore, it also includes you comprehending what your partner is saying, asking relevant questions and making healthy contributions. If it is advisable for couples to make it a duty to talk about things that matter to them, then it should be done in manner of conversation and not dictation.

When you keep the conversation line open, you will find out that your relationship with your spouse will become more friendly, free and trusting. Your marriage shall be ever sweet!

Remain Blessed!
