Good Intentions

Even though we have mentioned various aspects of this subject and have glanced at these sayings on more than one occasion in our study together, we need to give them further attention. Who hasn’t struggled with the daily grind of displeasing the Lord? Is there a grind that brings greater ache to the soul? None of us begins the day thinking about how we might displease God. On the contrary, most people I know face the dawn with high hopes of pleasing Him. In our minds we establish a game plan that includes a good attitude and wholesome activities. Some people prepare themselves for possible temptations and trials by meeting with God early in the morning and giving Him their day. Yet even when we do so, before the morning is half done, we can behave in ways that are downright discouraging, if not altogether demoralizing.

This week we will focus in on a specific target, on a specific way to please our heavenly Father. Rather than praying in general terms, “Lord, help me to please You,” we may benefit more by naming seven specific areas where we need help. This list of seven is inspired—Solomon called them the “seven which are an abomination” to our Lord. At the end of each of the seven discussions that follow, you will find a suggested prayer.
