Text: Nehemiah 7:5-6
5 And my God put into mine heart to gather together the nobles, and the rulers, and the people, that they might be reckoned by genealogy. And I found a register of the genealogy of them which came up at the first, and found written therein,
6 These are the children of the province, that went up out of the captivity, of those that had been carried away, whom Nebuchadnezzar the king of Babylon had carried away, and came again to Jerusalem and to Judah, every one unto his city;
Key Verse: “And my God put into mine heart to gather together the nobles, and the rulers, and the people, that they might be reckoned by genealogy. And I found a register of the genealogy of them which came up at the first, and found written therein” (Nehemiah 7:5).
MESSAGE:
A man set up a small business in 2011. One year after, he was able to amass 21 loyal customers. Unfortunately, the man had no record of his revenue and expenditure. He also had no record of customers who bought things on credit. He had assumed that he would keep all his transactions in memory. But his memory failed him many times. Knowing his weak point, unscrupulous customers who owed did not pay. In 2014, the business suffered and shut down.
God put in Nehemiah’s mind the need to gather the nobles, the rulers and the people, so they would be registered by genealogy. These were returned exiles carried away by King Nebuchadnezzar. Nehemiah also found the register of those who went out, as well as those who first returned. He needed to take a stock to examine those who returned and those who did not.
Proper record-keeping is as old as the history of humanity. Therefore, it is important. Without good record-keeping, it is doubtful if any meaningful discovery would have been made through the ages. Unfortunately, many churches today do not care about little details that should be kept for posterity. How much record do you keep of your business and life? Imagine how the Church would be if the Holy Spirit did not inspire men to write the Scriptures.
This underscores the importance of diligence in carrying out the work of the Vineyard, particularly in keeping and maintaining records of the church. Everyone must be diligent in keeping a solid record for posterity. God does not joke with record-keeping; no wonder He has the Book of Life which contains the names of all men and women washed with the blood of Jesus.
THOUGHT FOR THE DAY: Record-keeping is important for the Church today.
