GRACE TO WATCH AGAINST BURNOUT
1Kings 19:1-4 (CEV)
Ahab told his wife Jezebel what Elijah had done and…She sent a message to Elijah:
“You killed my prophets. Now I’m going to kill you!… by this time tomorrow.” Elijah was afraid when he got her message, and he ran … He …walked another whole day into the desert. Finally, he came to a large bush and sat down in its shade. He begged the LORD, “I’ve had enough. Just let me die!…”
Burnout is a state where a person is experiencing extreme stress, exhaustion and frustration. It can be experienced spiritually, physically, emotionally and otherwise. One major cause of burnout is lack of rest and replenishing of one’s strength; especially when such a person continually over exerts themselves. It is like running on an empty tank for a prolonged period of time.

In our text above, Elijah had just called down fire from heaven, slaughtered the 450 prophets of Baal, went up a mountain to pray for a heavy rain that had not fallen in three and a half years and by the Spirit, he outran Ahab’s chariot. Immediately after all these great exploits, Jezebel sent Elijah a threat against his life. Elijah was obviously not expecting this and was unprepared for it. He was exhausted and frustrated and wanted his life to end. But God still had a lot for him to do.
Often times, when a person is experiencing burnout, they tend to exaggerate their challenges. For example, Elijah expressed anxiety over his perception that he was the only prophet left and his fear that the children of Israel were after his life (1Kings 19:14). But Obadiah told him earlier of the hundred prophets in a cave (1Kings 18:13). To prevent burnout of any kind, please apply God’s help and wisdom so that you can rest adequately. Replenish your strength adequately in every area of your life.
Prayer:
Dear Father, I receive your help and wisdom to always rest and renew my strength adequately. Help me to never burnout.
