Hallow His Name

JULY 4, 2022

The Lord of hosts, Him you shall hallow.
Isaiah 8:13

 Recommended Reading: Ezekiel 39:7

Jesus taught His disciples to pray in His Name (John 14:13). When David approached Goliath, he said, “But I come to you in the name of the Lord of hosts, the God of the armies of Israel, whom you have defied” (1 Samuel 17:45). The holiness (sanctity) of God’s Name was a priority in Israel. Hallowing (keeping holy) His Name was a way for the world to know that Yahweh was the “Holy One in Israel” (Ezekiel 39:7).

When Jesus taught His disciples to pray, His first instruction was to hallow (keep holy) God’s Name (Matthew 6:9). It begins the prayer He taught them so as to say, “Let everything you pray for, everything you desire, result in the elevation and sanctity of God’s name in the earth.” If we are praying the Lord’s Prayer, we repeat the phrase “Hallowed be Your name.” But we can begin any prayer that way—a way to remind ourselves of not only who God is but also that what we pray for should honor His Name.

We pray “in Jesus’ Name” because His Name is “above every name” (Philippians 2:9). When you pray today, hallow His Name as you begin.

The great argument of Scripture is the glory of God’s own name.
