HE SEES EVERYTHING

January 15, 2024

“Nothing in all creation is hidden from God’s sight. Everything is uncovered and laid bare before the eyes of Him to whom we must give account.”

Hebrews 4:13

God is not blind, though we often live like He is.

The Lord sees everything about us.

Of course, the Lord doesn’t have actual eyes, but make no mistake, He sees our life in its entirety.

On one hand, this truth is deeply comforting, for it reminds us that we are not alone. The Lord isn’t distant and detached, off governing the cosmos somewhere, neglecting to pay attention to His people. He watches over us.  As Jesus affirms, His eye is on every sparrow (Matthew 10:29-31).

Yet, the awareness that the Lord sees everything about us is deeply convicting. How can we not shudder in holy fear when we realize that nothing is “hidden from His sight?” With Him, there are no secrets. There is no hiding behind the façade of false pretense or the paper-thin walls of excuses.

He sees every square inch of our private lives:

Every weakness.

Every bad decision.

Every time we succumb to temptation.

Simply put, He sees the ugliness of our sin that we conceal from others.

Church Fathers used the phrase, “Coram Deo,” to describe how all of life is lived ‘before the face of God.’

But honestly…when was the last time you even thought about this reality? If you’re like me, the ‘face of God’ often gets lost amidst the whirlwind of life.

The writer of Hebrews reminds us that one day we will literally stand before the face of God. Every believer will give an account of our lives to God who has seen every aspect of our earthly existence. (See 2 Corinthians 5:10Romans 14:10-12)

Truth be told, if Hebrews 4:13 was the end of the chapter, we’d have every reason to despair.

We’d rightfully conclude,  “That’s it. We’re all doomed! None of us deserve to come before the face of God.”

But, keep reading.

(No, seriously. Read Hebrews 4:14-16)

In these glorious verses, we are told that Jesus, the great High Priest of heaven, “sympathizes with our weaknesses” (Hebrews 4:15).

Don’t miss the stunning truth of this verse:

The God who sees us also sympathizes with us.

Can you imagine that? Really?

Jesus is not a cold, emotionless Judge who doesn’t understand the lure of temptation. He is God Incarnate who faced the full extent of temptation’s power and “yet was without sin” (Hebrews 4:15).

And even more stunning, Jesus invites us to come before His throne of grace “with confidence to receive mercy and find grace to help in our time of need” (Hebrews 4:16).

Let’s not reject His offer, my friends.

Choose to come before Him in transparent honesty and receive His grace.

Yes, we are fully seen, but we are also fully loved.
