Text: Nehemiah 6:15,16.

5 Then sent Sanballat his servant unto me in like manner the fifth time with an open letter in his hand;

6 Wherein was written, It is reported among the heathen, and Gashmu saith it, that thou and the Jews think to rebel: for which cause thou buildest the wall, that thou mayest be their king, according to these words.

Key Verse: “And it came to pass, that when all our enemies heard thereof, and all the heathen that were about us saw these things, they were much cast down in their own eyes: for they perceived that this work was wrought of our God.” – (Nehemiah 6:16)

MESSAGE:

A most foolish and perilous thing to do is to resist or fight the Almighty God. Gamaliel, the celebrated doctor of the law and Pharisee at the time of the persecution of the early church, gave a very brilliant advice to his comrades at the supreme council of the Jewish people. “…Refrain from these men, and let them alone” he said, “for if this counsel or this work be of men, it will come to nought: But if it be of God, ye cannot overthrow it; lest haply ye be found even to fight against God” (Acts 5:38,39).

Such counsel would have been served Sanballat, Tobiah and their fellow settlers in Samaria who vehemently opposed the rebuilding of Jerusalem after the Exile. At least, they would have spared the time and trouble expended in attacking Nehemiah and his team of committed builders in a bid to stop the work. At the end of the day, their intrigues landed them in utter frustration. When they saw that despite their sinister schemes, “the wall was finished” within a space of fifty-two days, it became clear to them that “this work was wrought of our God.” No one can successfully resist God.

The idea of resisting God’s will did not start or stop with the case of Sanballat and his cohorts. It has been so from the earliest of times. The people of Noah’s time tried it and got wiped out by a mighty deluge. When men decided to frustrate God’s plan of population dispersion by building the Tower of Babel, God foiled their ambition by confounding their language. Pharaoh realized belatedly that he could not detain Israel whose freedom God had decreed. The spread of the gospel by the early church could not be stopped by detractors and persecutors.

God is the ultimate winner. This truth should cheer everyone that walks and wars on the side of God. Has the Lord given you an assignment or a vision? Be sure that the pit of hell will raise enemies that will challenge it. Be assured also that if you keep at it, God will win.

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY: All the armaments of the world put together can never thwart God’s plan.
