“HONOUR the Lord WITH THY SUBSTANCE, and with the firstfruits of all thine increase:” – Proverbs 3:9
There are two types of honour described in the Bible. There are also two types of honour described in the dictionary. You can honour someone with substance and you can also honour him without substance. “Honour the Lord with your substance!” This is a famous saying from the book of Proverbs. This scripture is teaching you to honour someone by giving something tangible.
The gift you give represents the person’s worth and greatness to you. Most great people cannot use the gifts you give them. There are gifts you present only for the sake of honour. Honour with your substance by presenting something the person does not need and cannot use.
One day a man gave me two new cars. He said, “I have watched your ministry from afar and I feel I should encourage you and honour you. I know you will not drive these cars but I am giving them anyway to honour you.” Indeed, he was right. I could not drive those cars because I already had a car that I was using. But I had people that needed them and I immediately passed on the cars to them. This was not a seed given to meet my needs. It was a seed to honour me.
Many times, to honour someone is to present something valuable that he doesn’t need. Obviously God does not eat the first fruits of the dollars you present to him. You present gifts to God to honour him, not because he is hungry. God does not need any of the things we present to Him. They are just our honour for God.
