“If you have food and covering, with these we shall be content.” – 1 Timothy 6:8

March 12, 2020

Regardless of the state of our economy, somehow we still find the need to have more “things.” But in our rush to acquire wealth and possessions, do we ever stop to ask ourselves when enough is enough?

God’s Word tells us that when God meets all the basic necessities of life, contentment should follow. That should be enough. So, be thankful. (This is often easier said than done.)

The apostle Paul says, “Not that I speak from want; for I have learned to be content in whatever circumstances I am. I know how to get along with humble means, and I also know how to live in prosperity; in any and every circumstance I have learned the secret of being filled and going hungry, both of having abundance and suffering need” (my paraphrase of Philippians 4: 11-12a). In other words, the apostle Paul understood. He could be content with little. He could be content with much.

Let’s learn to follow his example. Because material “things” will come and go, but a relationship with God through Jesus Christ is eternal. Ask God for help aligning your priorities. For when you focus on your relationship with God, contentment is one of the many by-products.

So, as long as the basic necessities of life are being met, be thankful. All things over and above are just extra blessings!
