But let a man examine himself, and so let him eat of the bread and drink of the cup

Communion is a time of reflection, a time to examine our hearts and to be honest with ourselves before the Lord.

Picture the Passover table as Jesus held the common cup – a large goblet. As we sit together, and He extends the cup to each of us, what do we see in its reflection?

First, we see His beloved face, the Lamb Who became our perfect sacrifice. His body broken, His bloodshed became the answer for our sin-sick souls, the remedy for our shame, and the cure for our disease.

As we take the cup, we catch our own reflection. Without looking, we know our desperate state and how lost we would be without Him. We recognize our need for a righteous Savior. And as we take the cup, we remember that He paid the price and our hearts overflow.

Sitting around us at the table are our brothers and sisters, their faces reflected beside our own. The single cup reminds us that we are united in one body. As we lift the cup to our lips, let us reflect that we are bound by His blood to every person who sits at the table, and around the world, who calls on the name of Jesus.

Blessing:

May the Lord bless you and keep you. May the Lord make His face to shine upon you and be gracious unto you and give you His peace. Examine your heart to be certain that your faith is secure in Jesus. Reflect on His loving sacrifice and for adopting you into His family. Bring Him the gift of praise and thanksgiving!
