“Sing to Him a new song; play skillfully, and shout for joy. For the word of the Lord is right and true; He is faithful in all He does.” – Psalm 33: 3-4

How do we respond to political uncertainty? What do we do in the face of a chaotic election full of strong opinions, controversial statements, and polarizing views? How do we respond when both candidates have such glaring character flaws and moral deficiencies? Are we without hope? Is joy even a possibility? Well, I believe it’s actually possible to find true joy– even in the midst of an unstable political climate.

It’s a predictable cycle – every four years we face another potential political transition full of debate, arguments, and political enthusiasm. People hitch their wagons to a political ideal or establishment they believe will provide the answer and give them hope for a brighter tomorrow. The more passionate people are about their candidate or party, the more frustrated they become with those who don’t agree. These days, the angry shouting and frustrated chatter appear to have hit an all-time high in this year’s election cycle. As a result, many of us have seen a relationship bruised in the cross-fire. Maybe it was due to specific political opinions or how they were communicated – maybe through harsh rants on social media.

There is a lot of shouting taking place in this election season that has caused fear for many and pain for others. The question I have for the Christ-follower is this: are we shouting in despair and anger – or are we shouting in joy? It all comes down to what we believe about hope. Is our hope found in a political candidate or in the King of kings and Lord of lords? According to Scripture, God offers us peace and joy in the process, even when it appears hopeless. It all depends on where you’re looking. So, what will you choose this election season?
