“For we have not an high priest which cannot be touched with the feeling of our infirmities; but was in all points tempted like as we are, yet without sin.”
Hebrews 4:15 KJV
In the Old Testament, the Israelites as a nation were wrapped up in the standing of the high priest. The standing of every one of them before God was based on their high priest. The priesthood was instituted by God to be an avenue to bless His people because when God gave them the laws, they couldn’t keep them. So, they had a high priest that stood on their behalf. Since they could not by themselves stand before God because of sin in their lives; the high priest stood as a representative of the people before the presence of God.
If the high priest was seen as good in the sight of God, the entire nations of Israel was seen as good. If the high priest was perfect before God, the entire Israel was seen as perfect. If the high priest is accepted as holy before God, the entire Israel is accepted as holy. If the high priest is bad, their good was not accepted. If the high priest was good and they are doing wrong, all of them became right. That’s how the law is. No matter the good they do, if the high priest had a problem, all of them became disqualified. That is the law.
This high priesthood was not perfect because whatever has to do with man does not have perfection. It was not perfect because they made mistakes and by reason of death, they could not continue forever. So, it is not a perfect priesthood. You cannot stake your life on that. You can’t depend on that. You can’t build on that. That’s why the law is not good. The law had problems. It could not perfect anyone.
Praise God! There is a better way by which we draw nearer to God. That Way is Jesus. He is our perfect High Priest and the Author of eternal salvation. Come boldly to Him today.
