Text: Exodus 17:8-16 (KJV)

8 Then came Amalek, and fought with Israel in Rephidim.

9 And Moses said unto Joshua, Choose us out men, and go out, fight with Amalek: to morrow I will stand on the top of the hill with the rod of God in mine hand.

10 So Joshua did as Moses had said to him, and fought with Amalek: and Moses, Aaron, and Hur went up to the top of the hill.

11 And it came to pass, when Moses held up his hand, that Israel prevailed: and when he let down his hand, Amalek prevailed.

12 But Moses’ hands were heavy; and they took a stone, and put it under him, and he sat thereon; and Aaron and Hur stayed up his hands, the one on the one side, and the other on the other side; and his hands were steady until the going down of the sun.

13 And Joshua discomfited Amalek and his people with the edge of the sword.

14 And the LORD said unto Moses, Write this for a memorial in a book, and rehearse it in the ears of Joshua: for I will utterly put out the remembrance of Amalek from under heaven.

15 And Moses built an altar, and called the name of it Jehovahnissi:

16 For he said, Because the LORD hath sworn that the LORD will have war with Amalek from generation to generation.

Key Verse: “And it came to pass, when Moses held up his hand, that Israel prevailed; and when he let down his hand, Amalek prevailed” (Exodus 17:11).

MESSAGE:

Amalekites, a race of wild nomads who were the descendants of Esau, saw the migration of the Israelites towards their region as a security threat. Amalek came to attack shortly after the Israelites enjoyed a miracle of provision of water from the rock. This confirms the truth that Satan always seeks to attack believers after the experience of victory and miracles.

From the text, we could see that Joshua fought the physical battle while Moses engaged in the spiritual battle through prayer of intercession. As long as Moses was praying with his hands lifted up, Israel kept winning. But when he was tired and let down his hands, the Amalekites were prevailing. This vividly proves that the strongest arm of man will fail us. It is God alone whose outstretched hand is out still and can never fail. As Aaron and Hur later assisted Moses to steady his hand, we should always intercede for our leaders and support them in prayers.

From the role of Moses, we see why believers need to respect their God-appointed leaders. God showed Israel that the hand of Moses whom they had been chiding, could do more for their safety than their own hands. Joshua completely discomfited Amalek the same way Jesus was victorious on the Cross over Satan and his agents.

Lifting up Christ and his banners of love and truth therefore is greater than the hands of Moses that were lifted up. Christ is both to us our Joshua, the Captain of our salvation, who fights our battles and our Moses, who ever lives, making intercession above, that our faith fail not. As long as we put our faith in Christ unwaveringly, our victory in the battle of life is sure. The enemy will definitely fight against us, but will never prevail.

Thought For The Day: Let your faith in Jesus be your weapon in battle.
