May 17, 2021“The gatekeeper opens the gate for him, and the sheep listen to his voice. He calls his own sheep by name and leads them out. When he has brought out all his own, he goes on ahead of them, and his sheep follow him because they know his voice.” John 10:3-4

What makes a leader? More importantly, what makes a good leader? With so many different opinions on the topic, how can we know the truth? Let’s look at the life of Jesus. How did Jesus actually lead?

  1. Leaders Serve Others.

While dictatorial or authoritarian leadership may seem easier, Jesus calls leaders to serve others. In Jesus’ case, this involved the ultimate sacrifice – death on the cross in our place.

  1. Leaders are Invested.

For some leaders of large corporations or huge departments, personal knowledge of everyone is not feasible. However, it is the leader’s responsibility to ensure that the team is supported and cared for; that their professional needs are met. Jesus is personally invested in each of our lives. He knows your name and is concerned about where you’re headed.

  1. Leaders Pave the Way.

Leaders take risks. They think outside the box – they pave the way. Jesus tells a parable of a shepherd leaving his 99 sheep to find one that wandered off. He uses this example to describe His heart for the lost and His hope that everyone would know and experience the grace and forgiveness He offers. Jesus paved the way for you and me to have the right relationship with God.

If you’re looking to be a better leader, start by first looking to Jesus.  In a world of countless leadership tips and flawed human examples – look to the one who led boldly and sacrificially. Look to Jesus – the ultimate example of leadership
